Western Taiwan on the High Speed Train

Speed up and down western Taiwan and the major cities on its coast via the fast, cheap and super convenient Taiwan High Speed Rail. This itinerary includes highlights along the Shinkansen train line as well as some side trips, and is somewhat fast-paced. If you feel you could do it at this pace, consider getting a Taiwan High Speed Rail Pass. Tourists that would prefer a slower pace, spending more time at each location, should get discounted One-Way Tickets and other single tickets.


National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall

Day 1 and 2 – Taipei

Spend a few days in the vibrant capital of Taiwan, with an afternoon or morning soaking in the hot springs at Beitou. Be sure to visit must-see spots such as Taipei 101 and the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. Consider using one of the Taipei Metro day passes.

Qingtiangang Grassland

Day 3 – Day trip to Yangmingshan

Yangmingshan National Park is the easiest place to go hiking near Taipei. A vast number of trails for all kinds of abilities are available.

Taichung Cultural Heritage Park

Day 4 – Taichung

Hop on the Taiwan High Speed Rail and speed down to Taichung, home to the famous Rainbow Village as well as plenty of cultural and culinary delights. If it’s hot, first head to Miyahara for their popular ice creams.

Fort Zeelandia (Anping Old Fort)

Day 5 – Tainan

Tainan has a long history of foreign influences blending with local culture, such as a classical Japanese department store and an old Dutch fort. This quiet city is a pleasure to explore, and also has a good collection of traditional temples.

Lotus Pond Dragon Kaohsiung

Day 6 – Kaohsiung

A large port city, Kaohsiung offers exciting night markets, one of the world’s most picturesque metro stations and a rich maritime history. The Lotus Pond is an essential visit, with its amazing Dragon and Tiger pagodas.

Tianliao Moon World

Day 7 – Day trip from Kaohsiung

There are various side tips from Kaohsiung, but if you want to do something a little different head to Tianliao Moon World. The easy walking routes will take you through this rather mysterious, unique landscape.
