Miyahara (宮原) is a popular traditional department store. Housed in a red-brick structure with a stunning modern glass roof, it was originally built in 1927 by Miyahara Takeo, a renowned Japanese doctor, as an ophthalmology clinic and continued to operate for many years until it was left in disrepair after the clinic closed.
Some time after the building was purchased by famous pineapple cake producer Dawncake, who revitalised the interior decor and helped to preserve the classical red-brick walls and archways. The most popular item to buy is Miyahara’s ice cream, with dozens of people always in the line for this local treat. If the line is too long, check out the milk tea area, or head inside to see the various posh chocolates. If you are in holiday mode and don’t mind splashing the cash a bit, there is lots of offer here. Be sure to try the Dawncake too, with free samples on offer before you buy.
