Maritime Plaza

Keelung’s main chillout and festival spot

Keelung Maritime Plaza

Built in 2009, Maritime Plaza (海洋廣場) is located in the heart of downtown Keelung. A stone’s throw from the main train station, bus station and cruise ship dock, Maritime Plaza is often the first attraction people visit, and is a popular local hangout besides. The large square stretches out before Keelung’s harbor, making it a fun place to watch boats coming and going, particularly the large and magnificent cruise ships that come in to port for the day.

Facing the harbor and spread out across the plaza are large letters spelling KEELUNG, which at night light up and change colors. It’s a lovely sight to behold and a warm welcome to the city’s seafaring visitors. The plaza is also a prime location for eagle-spotting.

Maritime Plaza is a central community space, often where large events are held, decorations for holidays set up, and crowds gather to watch firework displays on New Years. When the weather is fair, groups and families are drawn to the plaza as well as local musicians, buskers, and even karaoke singers. There are plenty of benches to sit on and relax after a long day of sightseeing, with several convenience stores in case you need some refreshments.

It is worth noting that the government is pursuing plans for redevelopment of Keelung’s harbor front. The project, aiming to expand pedestrian space and access to the coastline, may take several years, and means there will be some construction around the harbor area until completion.

How to get there

Maritime Plaza is located at Zhongyi Road (or Zhong 1st Rd, 忠一路), and is easily accessible from any major public transportation downtown. From Keelung train station walk east along Zhongyi Road (5 mins). From Keelung Bus Station turn left onto Zhongyi Road from the roundabout, and you will soon arrive at Maritime Plaza.
