Heping Island Park (和平島公園) is Keelung’s hidden gem, a sanctuary from the bustling city. It’s enviable location on the coast northeast of Keelung Harbor makes it a prime spot for taking in the ocean air and sights. An island steeped in natural beauty, it showcases many of the geological features unique to this corner of Taiwan, formed around 20 million years ago. The distinctive mushroom rock formations that Yehliu Geopark is famous for can be seen here, on a smaller scale. As a geopark itself, Heping Island both preserves these unique landscapes and promotes education about them.
If you’re craving a beach day, Heping Island can offer a unique twist on the experience. While not a typical beach, it offers both sand and waves. Enticing crystal clear ocean pools offer the opportunity to swim alongside fish, while their partitions serve as a buffer for ocean waves and currents. There are also sizable pools for both kids and pets. Adjacent to these pools is the “Summer Stay Beach” – an inviting expanse of sand to play in, complete with shaded picnic tables for snacking.
There are multiple places for refreshments in the park, with some of the most scenic views you can find in Keelung. The visitor center has a restaurant and a bar with a terrace, with the ground floor housing a gift shop featuring locally made items geared toward the sustainability-minded. At the highest point in the park sits the Radar Station Cafe. Once an army base, it is now a haven for those seeking coffee, cake, and sweeping ocean views.
How to get there
Via public transportation, you can catch the 101 or 102 bus from downtown Keelung (opposite Maritime Plaza), getting off at the Heping Island Park Stop. You will still need to walk about 6 minutes to the park entrance. They don’t run too frequently (around every 40-50 minutes), so plan ahead.
You can also take the 103 or 104 and get off at the Zhengbin Fishing Harbor Stop if you are willing to walk further (Zhengbin Fishing Harbor is another Keelung attraction worth a visit!). If you don’t want any of the hassle, taxi is the fastest and easiest route, and the 15-20 minute ride from downtown will cost about 200 NTD.
