Eight Spirits Cave

Cave complex full of odd amenities

Pingxi Line Eight Spirits Cave

The Eight Spirits Cave (八仙洞), also known as the ‘Underground Village’, is a long network of caves near Pingxi Station on the Pingxi Line in New Taipei. These caves connect and head away from each other in a rather random manner, making it a real maze, and lots of fun to explore. It’s certainly a bit eerie, but is an excellent escape from Taiwan’s scorching summer weather, or the cold outside in winter.

Entering Eight Spirits Cave
Entering the caves is a bit scary!

The inside is not really like any cave most people have been into, and it lives up to its ‘Underground Village’ name. Inside you’ll come across features such as rest areas containing stone tables and chairs, for those that want to take a picnic, plus religious sculptures and artifacts. It takes several minutes to explore the network and make your way back out.

Be sure to explore the various paths, as there are a few surprises along the way

How to get there

The Eight Spirits Cave is located a few minutes walk from Pingxi Station on the Pingxi Line. To get here, first head into Pingxi Old Street. At the intersection after the bridge, head right and walk under the train tracks. At the path to the next left you’ll see a sign pointing to the cave, which is past the public toilets and behind the red temple up above.
