The Maokong Gondola (貓空纜車) is a popular attraction in the south of Taipei. It provides amazing views over the city on the way up, such as of Taipei 101 and the metro trains, whether it’s day or night. All in all, the gondola makes for a perfect day trip from Taipei.
The gondola also features some glass bottom ‘crystal cabins’ that allow riders to look directly down below. Particularly after passing Zhinan Temple Station, when the gondola enters a steep V-shaped gully, it’s a rather breathtaking experience in itself. Getting off at the stops along the way you’ll be greeted by countless traditional tea plantations and tea shops, numerous hiking trails and very Instagramable panoramic views over the capital.
The Maokong Gondola is quite long in comparison to many, and it takes between 20 to 30 minutes to get from the start to the end. One stop costs NT$70, two stops is NT$100 and three stops is NT$120. As well as the below day passes, passengers can simply use their EasyCard or other IC card on the system. Just tap on and tap off at each stop. There are also IC card recharge machines at each of these stops. Alternatively, KKDay has discount Taipei Zoo & Maokong Gondola Roundtrip Tickets.
Open: Usually 9am to 9pm
Closed: Mondays, apart from national holidays
The bottom station on the Maokong Gondola is a minute or so on foot from Taipei Zoo Station, at the southern end of Taipei Metro’s brown line. To get there from Taipei Station, take the blue line to Zhongxiao Fuxing Station, then transfer to the brown line and make your way south (29 mins, NT$50).
There is a conveniently placed YouBike rental station between Taipei Zoo Station and the bottom station on the gondola. It would take about one hour to get here from central Taipei if heading along the city rivers.
